SJ Williams was abandoned as an infant on the steps of the monastery Mont Saint-Michel located on a small rocky island about 1 km from the north coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon River in Normandy.

As a child, she spoke little and attained great strength in her lower body as she daily climbed the 900 steep steps of the Escalier de Dentelle (Lace Staircase) to the gallery around the roof of the abbey church. There she spent her days wandering the maze of rooms, staircases, and vaulted halls that make up the abbey and playing the great pipe organ adjacent to the cloisters.

The events that led to her pilgrimage to London to meet the Beatles in the late 1960's remain somewhat shrouded in mystery, but she does assert that various news accounts referring to her as a stalker are exaggerated and that her lonely days at Mont Saint-Michel and her close association with Ringo Starr are what made her the drummer she is today.
